Siliguri, Sept. 7 -- With the Ganga flowing above the extreme danger mark at Manikchak Ghat and the flood situation worsening in parts of West Bengal's Malda district, the administration has stepped up rescue, relief, health and security measures in the affected areas.

According to a situation report issued by the Malda district administration till 10 pm on Sunday, 12 gram panchayats have been affected. Eight relief camps and four community kitchens are functioning, providing shelter and food to 475 people. As part of rescue operations, 21 boats have been deployed and 2,014 people have been shifted to safer locations.
