Bengaluru, July 18 -- A political contest has intensified over the location of Karnataka's proposed second international airport, with union Minister V Somanna pitching for Shira in Tumakuru district while Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara reiterated his preference for Tumakuru city, saying the final decision rests on the outcome of the technical evaluation by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Somanna has written to union Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu seeking the establishment of the airport near Shira, arguing that the project should serve as a catalyst for the balanced development of Central and North Karnataka rather than further concentrating infrastructure around Bengaluru.
