Kolkata, Sept. 9 -- The Assam government has sought the West Bengal government's assistance in acquiring and preserving the Kolkata residence where Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika spent a significant part of his creative life and composed several of his timeless songs.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has written to his counterpart in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, requesting his personal intervention to facilitate the purchase of the house at 77B, Golf Club Road, Tollygunge, and its development as a heritage property.

In the letter, Sarma said Hazarika had spent a "significant part of his creative years" at the Kolkata address and created several "immortal, timeless classics" from there.
