Guwahati, April 9 -- Over 84 per cent of the 2.51 crore-plus electors across Assam cast their vote amid stringent security despite intermittent rains in the single-phase Assembly elections that remained generally peaceful except for some sporadic incidents on Thursday.

As the polling officially drew to a close at 5 pm, the Election Commission of India (ECI) gave the voting figure as 84.42 pc. However, the percentage is set to go up, as many voters were still waiting outside the booths when the clock struck 5 pm.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the high turnout as "historic" and said "our people have come out in unprecedented numbers... In many polling booths, participation is crossing 95 per cent."According to police, polling...
