Guwahati, April 9 -- Over three-fourth of the 2.51 crore-plus electors across Assam cast their vote amid stringent security despite intermittent rains in the single-phase Assembly elections that remained generally peaceful except for some sporadic incidents on Thursday.

With two hours left for the polls to officially close, the voting figure climbed to 75.91 per cent, the Election Commission of India (ECI) said. "As of 3 pm, the polling figure was 75.91 pc," the ECI said.

According to police, polling has remained overall peaceful. Nine people were held for their alleged involvement in poll-related unrest at three places in the state. Some people also sustained minor injuries in clashes that broke out at polling booths after voting began....
