Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 3 -- Former Mizoram Governor and former BJP Kerala President Kummanam Rajasekharan has said the devastating floods in the heritage village of Aranmula have reinforced the long-standing environmental concerns over the proposed airport project, asserting that wetlands and paddy fields are indispensable natural flood buffers that must be protected.
In an article titled "The Aranmula Airport Obsession and the Lessons from Flood Disasters," Rajasekharan said the recent flooding in Aranmula, on the banks of the Pampa River in Pathanamthitta district, should end any attempt to revive the airport proposal, as the disaster has demonstrated the consequences of ignoring ecological realities in the pursuit of development.
