Chennai, April 9 -- The process of withdrawal of nominations for the high stake April 23 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections began on Thursday amid filing of papers by 7,599 candidates, recording a two decade high in a five-cornered contest.

With the presence of more parties, the filing of nominations has been increasing significantly in every elections and has almost doubled after 2006, touching 7,599 this year, with a majority being Independents.

Of the total 7,599 nominations, 5,081 papers, including those filed by leaders of top political parties, were found in order and accepted during scrutiny yesterday.

A total of 2,480 papers were rejected, while 38 nominations were treated as withdrawn.
