Bhubaneswar, July 30 -- AIIMS Bhubaneswar has achieved a significant milestone in advanced critical care by successfully treating a 49-year-old woman police officer who survived severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) after receiving 36 days of prolonged veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) support.
The police officer from Jharsuguda in western Odisha was initially admitted to a corporate hospital in Bhubaneswar on April 18, 2026, with severe pneumonia. Despite receiving optimal intensive care, including mechanical ventilation in the prone position, her oxygen levels continued to deteriorate.
