Panchkula, July 24 -- India is moving rapidly towards becoming an ageing society, but its employment policy for senior citizens appears to be lagging behind. Government data presented in Parliament reveals that only 1.89 lakh people aged over 60 have registered on the Centre's flagship employment portal, even as the elderly population is projected to double over the next quarter century.
The figures come against the backdrop of the UNFPA-India Ageing Report 2023, which estimates that the share of Indians aged 60 years and above will rise from 10.4 per cent in 2022 to 20.8 per cent by 2050.
