New Delhi, Aug. 27 -- Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee on Thursday voiced serious concern over what he termed the erosion of constitutional governance in West Bengal, alleging that the state was moving toward a "police state" and asserting that the judiciary remained the last safeguard for the protection of fundamental rights.
In a post on his WhatsApp channel, Banerjee said the unchecked use of state power without constitutional limitations posed a grave threat to democratic values and institutions.
"West Bengal is witnessing the steady erosion of constitutional governance and an alarming descent into a police state," Banerjee said.
