Kolkata, June 3 -- The internal crisis within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) escalated sharply on Wednesday after 58 party legislators reportedly submitted a letter to Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose proposing expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee as the new Leader of the Opposition and Akhruzzaman as the party's chief whip, in a direct challenge to the leadership decisions of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee.

The move is being viewed as the strongest indication yet of a possible split within the TMC legislative party.

According to sources in the dissident camp, the 58 MLAs have formally conveyed their support for Ritabrata's elevation as Leader of the Opposition, rejecting the party leadership's nomination of Sovandeb Chattopadhyay for the ...
