Bengaluru, Sept. 8 -- A surprise crackdown on child labour at Bengaluru's Yeshwanthpur APMC market led to the rescue of 19 children on Tuesday, with Chief Minister D K Shivakumar directing police to arrest those employing children and warning that senior police officials could face suspension for failing to act.
The operation was launched shortly after Shivakumar visited the APMC market and interacted with farmers, labourers and traders. During the visit, members of the public alerted him to the alleged employment of children at shops in the market.
Taking immediate cognisance of the complaints, five special teams comprising police and labour officials were formed under the supervision of DCP, North Division, B S Nemagouda.
