Shivamogga, July 5 -- With incessant monsoon rains swelling inflows into the Tunga reservoir, authorities on Sunday opened 10 of the 22 crest gates at Gajanur near Shivamogga, releasing over 18,000 cusecs of water downstream and triggering an alert for people living along the riverbanks.

Officials of the Tunga Project said the reservoir received a heavy inflow of 20,565 cusecs on Sunday morning, prompting a phased release of excess water to maintain safe storage levels. The reservoir has a gross storage capacity of 3.24 TMC.
