Gangtok, July 21 -- At least ten people were killed and 25 others were trapped after a methane gas blast at an under-construction tunnel of the NHPC's Teesta State VI hydroelectric project in Sikkim's Namchi district.
NHPC, in a statement, said that the accident occurred on July 20, afternoon, after a "sudden burst of suspected methane gas trapped/embedded inside the rocks which led to explosion generating dense fumes and toxic gases".
It said the project team is working in close coordination with the district administration, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local authorities and other emergency agencies to support the ongoing rescue operations.
