Kolkata, July 6 -- Former chief minister and Trinamool leader Mamata Banerjee on Monday hit the streets demanding justice for the minor girl from Suryapur in Baruipur who was allegedly subjected to rape and murder, turning the incident into a major political flashpoint in the state.

Carrying candles and leading supporters from outside her Kalighat residence, Banerjee launched a protest march in the evening under the slogan "Tomar sur amar sur - justice for Baruipur" (Your Voice, My Voice - Justice for Baruipur).

The slogan quickly emerged as the central message of the demonstration, with supporters raising it repeatedly during the march as a call for justice for the victim.
