Dhaka, Aug. 22 -- Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has resigned from the cabinet and been appointed Political Adviser to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman with ministerial status.

The Cabinet Division issued two separate notifications in this regard on Saturday.

The first notification, signed by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani, said the President accepted the resignation of Swapon as Information and Broadcasting Minister.

The other notification, also signed by the cabinet secretary, said Swapon was appointed as the Prime Minister's Political Adviser under Rules 3B(1) and 3B(2) of the Rules of Business, 1996.
