Rivers swallow nine schools, put six more in Gaibandha at risk
, Aug. 19 -- Nine government primary schools in Gaibandha district have been swallowed by the Teesta, Jamuna and Brahmaputra rivers in just one month, even as riverbank protection projects are being implemented.
Besides, six educational institutions are now under serious threat of erosion, leaving the education of nearly 3,000 children uncertain, according to Gaibandha District Primary Education Office.
Bhorer Pakhi Government Primary School in Kapasia Union of Sundarganj upazila was washed away by the Teesta early Tuesday morning.
Locals alleged that Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) took only nominal measures to protect the school.
