Madaripur, Sept. 4 -- A police officer was killed and nine others injured when a police van overturned while trying to avoid hitting a child in Sadar upazila of Madaripur on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Abdus Salam, a police officer. He died at the scene.

The accident occurred around 3pm in the Mather Bazar area, police and local sources said.

Locals rescued the injured police members and took them to Madaripur Sadar Hospital for treatment.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Farhiha Rafique Bhavna said the police van lost control and overturned while its driver was trying to save a child crossing the road.

Those who sustained serious injuries were sent to Dhaka for better treatment, the ASP added.
