Dhaka, Aug. 13 -- BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday formally announced Secretary General and LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the party's candidate for the presidential election.

The announcement came at a meeting of the BNP Standing Committee members and senior leaders held at the Prime Minister's Office at the Bangladesh Secretariat.

Prime Minister's Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman said Tarique made the announcement towards the end of his opening remarks at the meeting.

"He announced Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the BNP's candidate for the presidential election," Ruman said.

The party leaders present at the meeting welcomed the announcement with prolonged applause, he added.
