Dhaka, March 30 -- Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday launched a sports allowance programme for national athletes, reiterating the government's commitment to turning sports into a viable profession and source of livelihood.

The prime minister inaugurated the programme at Shapla Hall of the Prime Minister's Office in Dhaka, according to a post of PMO's verified Facebook page.

During the event, athletes who have brought international recognition for the country were also honoured for their achievements.

Senior government officials, sports organisers and athletes were present at the event.
