WELLINGTON, Sept. 23 -- New Zealand's new firearms laws came into force on Wednesday, marking the biggest overhaul of the country's firearms regulatory system in more than 40 years, Associate Justice Minister Nicole McKee said.

Most provisions of the Arms Act 2026 and Arms Regulations 2026 took effect, replacing legislation dating from 1983 and regulations from 1992 with a system designed to improve public safety, simplify compliance and rebuild trust with licensed firearm owners, McKee said in a statement.

Firearms Safety and Education New Zealand also began operating as the country's independent firearms regulator, separate from police, she added.
