Moulvibazar, Oct. 12 -- A court in Moulvibazar on Monday sentenced a man to death for murdering a tea vendor over an unpaid debt of Tk 1,263 in Sadar upazila in 2008.

The condemned convict was identified as Sadik Mia.

Judge Shamsad Begum of the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court delivered the verdict, acquitting seven other accused - Toskir Mia, Siraj Mia, Nurul Islam, Saifur Rahman, Ataur Rahman, Shafique Mia and Asab Mia.

According to the prosecution, tea vendor Durud Mia asked Sadik Mia to repay an outstanding debt of Tk 1,263 in the Narainpasha area on June 12, 2008.

Angered by the demand, Sadik left the place only to return with accomplices, and attacked Durud with sharp weapons, leaving him injured.
