, Sept. 29 -- A Joypurhat court on Tuesday convicted a man and sentenced him to life imprisonment in a case filed over violating a class VIII schoolgirl last year.

Joypurhat Women and Children Repression Tribunal Judge Abdur Rahman handed down the punishment.

The convict is Hamidul Sheikh, 55, son of Samsuddin Sheiklh of Panchbibi uapzila.

The court also fined him Tk 50,000, in default to suffer six months more in jail.

According to the prosecution, Hamidul violated the girl after tying her mouth by a scarf on March 27, 2025.

Hamidul used to abuse her for several times after issuing a threat not to disclose the matter to anyone.

The girl's family members noticed the incident after she became pregnant.
