Kushtia, July 7 -- A prisoner, who had been serving a life imprisonment in a rape case, died at Kushtia District Jail on Tuesday night after falling ill.

The deceased was identified as Ariful Islam, 27, son of Abdul Karim of Rajinathpur village in Khoksa upazila of the district. He had been serving a life sentence in the rape case since 2019.

According to prison authorities, Ariful suddenly complained of severe chest pain inside the jail around 8:30pm and became critically ill.

He was immediately taken to Kushtia General Hospital, where the on-duty physician declared him dead.

Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of the hospital Dr Iqbal Hasan said the prisoner died before being brought to the hospital.
