Dhaka, July 12 -- Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Sunday expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of veteran politician, senior lawyer, former Speaker and acting President Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar.

In a condolence message, he described Jamiruddin Sircar as a distinguished figure in Bangladesh's political and legal arena and an eminent constitutional and legal expert.

The minister said he had played a unique role in organising Supreme Court lawyers in support of Bangladesh's Liberation War in 1971.

He also noted that Jamiruddin Sircar was a founding member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and made significant contributions to national politics as a member of the party's Standing Committee.
