, July 13 -- The government on Monday reiterated that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would have to land in jail if she surrenders, while efforts to extradite her are underway.

"If she surrenders, steps will be taken as per the existing law. She will have to land in jail. The law will take its own course," State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The State Minister said instead of surrendering, Hasina's remarks from a foreign land appear to be an effort to inspire Awami League leaders and activists who either went into hiding or fled. "I see no other reason."
