Dhaka, June 11 -- Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Thursday proposed granting full fare exemptions on government-owned public transport, specifically trains, to citizens aged 65 years and above, as part of efforts to enhance social protection for senior citizens.

"The role of senior citizens in nation-building is invaluable, and our government remains steadfast in its commitment to their welfare," he said while unveiling the national budget - with an outlay of Tk 9.38 lakh crore - for the fiscal year 2026-27 in Parliament.
