Colombia quake death toll hits 281, hundreds still missing
BOGOTA, Aug. 14 -- The death toll from Monday's 7.4-magnitude earthquake in Colombia has risen to 281, with 3,971 people injured and 379 missing, the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management said Thursday.
The quake now affects 44,936 families and 102,105 people in 15 departments and 426 municipalities, the agency said.
It added that 10,677 homes had been destroyed and 65,841 others damaged.
According to the Colombian Geological Service, the temblor struck western Colombia at 7:34 a.m. local time (1234 GMT) Monday. Its epicenter was near San Jose del Palmar, in the department of Choco, at a depth of 96 km.
