Jhenaidah, Sept. 10 -- An local leader of Awami League, now facing ban on its activities, was hacked to death by unidentified criminals in Harinakundu upazila of Jhenaidah on Wednesday night.

The deceased was identified as Monayem Hossain, 48, president of an AL ward unit and a ward member of Vayna Union Parishad.

Some criminals attacked Monayem, son of Abul Mondal of the same village, and hacked him while returning home from Moyenkhali Bazar around 9 pm, said witnesses.

He was initially taken to Kushtia General Hospital where doctors declared him dead at around 10:30pm.

Police said one of his hands was almost severed from his body, while he sustained multiple deep wounds to his abdomen and other parts of the body.
