30,000 marooned as Khowai embankment breaches in Habiganj
, July 10 -- Around 30,000 people across four unions in three upazilas of Habiganj district have been marooned by floodwater after incessant rain and hill runoff from the upstream caused the Khowai River embankment to breach.
Sources at the local Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said the river protection embankment collapsed in the Kaliganj area of Laskarpur union in Sadar upazila on Thursday evening.
The gushing water inundated villages in Laskarpur and Poil unions of Sadar upazila, Lamatashi of Bahubal, and Makrampur union of Baniachang upazila.
Many affected families have started moving to safer places with livestock, furniture and essential belongings.
