, Sept. 21 -- A Tangail court on Monday sentenced three people to death and four others to life imprisonment for killing a former chairman of Dainna Union Parishad Rafiqul Islam Faruk in Tangail sadar upazila in 2013.

Tangail Additional Sessions Judge Md Foysal Al Mamun handed down the punishment.

The condemned convicts are- Saniat Khan Bappa, 30, the then vice-president of Chhatra League, Md Azad, 25, son of Afzal Fakir and Shahjahan Mia, 31, son of Shaheed Mia of Dainna union.

The court also fined them Tk one lakh each.

The lifers are-Md Sujon, 32, Sanwar Hossain, 34, Shafiqul Islam Shafik, 25, Rujbel alias Emon, 25. Of them, Shafik and Rujbel were tried in absentia.

It also fined them Tk 50,000 each, in default, to suffer one year...
