India, March 24 -- Every time I wanted a beach holiday, the default was Goa, but this time I wanted something different: the sound of the sea without a DJ competing with it, a long lunch at a table I hadn't booked three days in advance, and a coastline without the crowds. So instead of turning toward the familiar, I kept driving south along the Konkan coast, past the Maharashtra border, and into Sindhudurg district, toward a town I had only ever heard mentioned in passing - Vengurla.
