India, May 29 -- A new restaurant has been named the best in North America.

Smyth in Chicago took the No. 1 spot on the 2026 North America's 50 Best Restaurants list, announced May 28 during a spirited awards ceremony in New Orleans. Now in its second year, the ranking considers restaurants across the United States, Canada, and parts of the Caribbean, though this year's list featured only U.S. and Canadian establishments.

Led by John Shields and Karen Urie Shields, Smyth is known for an ambitious tasting menu that draws heavily from close relationships with farmers and producers. Inside the restaurant's pared-back West Loop dining room, the menu moves with the seasons and focuses on carefully sourced ingredients.
