India, Sept. 7 -- The Tamil Nadu government has now approved the long awaited second airport project in Chennai and is considering shifting the location of the proposed airport. Two new locations are now emerging as contenders for the next big airport in the city, allowing for a new decision on the next major aviation hub.

Why was Parandur dropped? The project was earlier planned at Parandur, near Chennai. However, there was strong opposition to the proposed site due to problems with water bodies, agriculture lands and the effects on local communities. The government is now looking at other options that might match connectivity, feasibility and environmental concerns.
