India, Aug. 29 -- August 29 marks the occasion of National Sports Day. It commemorates the birth anniversary of Indian hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. He was a key part of the Indian team that won Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936 .

National Sports Day was first officially observed in India in 2012, with the date of August 29 chosen to commemorate Major Dhyan Chand's birth anniversary. Major Dhyan Chand, who was for his extraordinary ball control and goal-scoring ability and nicknamed the 'Hockey Wizard' helped scale hockey to new heights in India. He is often regarded as the world's greatest field hockey player.
