India, July 16 -- The sovereignty of the Falkland Islands remains one of the world's longest-running territorial disputes. The South Atlantic archipelago is currently administered by the United Kingdom, but Argentina continues to claim the islands - known there as Islas Malvinas - as part of its national territory.

Why is the Issue Back in the News?

The dispute has recently gained attention again after Argentine football players displayed a banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" following a victory over England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The UK criticized the display, while Argentina's Foreign Ministry reiterated its sovereignty claim. FIFA is reviewing the incident under its rules on political messaging.
