India, July 28 -- India celebrated a landmark moment at the Commonwealth Games 2026 as Sharmila Dhankhar claimed the gold medal in the Women's Shot Put F57 event. The 40-year-old produced a best throw of 9.81m to finish at the top of the standings, delivering India's first-ever gold medal in para athletics at the Commonwealth Games. Her victory also ended the country's 20-year wait for a para athletics medal at the event.

Dhankhar's winning effort proved too strong for the rest of the field, with Ghana's Zinabu Issah taking silver with 8.65m, while Nigeria's Eucharia Iyiazi secured bronze after a best throw of 8.19m. Fellow Indian Shilpa narrowly missed out on the podium, finishing fourth in the final.
