India, Nov. 4 -- Pooja Sethi has made history in the 2026 US midterm elections by becoming the first Indian-American woman and the first Asian-American Democratic woman elected to the Texas Legislature. The Democratic candidate defeated Republican Jennifer Mushtaler in the Texas House District 47 race, marking a significant milestone for Indian-American representation in the state's politics.

Sethi's victory comes after a closely watched campaign that focused on public education, healthcare, gun safety, affordability and representation. Her election campaign also drew attention amid a controversy over remarks made by Republican Texas Railroad Commission nominee Bo French about South Asian students at the University of Texas at Austin.
