India, Aug. 1 -- Labour politician Bev Craig has been elected as the new Mayor of Greater Manchester, succeeding UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham after winning the mayoral by-election. Her victory ensures Labour retains control of one of England's most influential mayoralties following Burnham's return to Westminster and subsequent appointment as Prime Minister.

Craig defeated Reform UK's Sian Astley, receiving 309,525 votes (66.3%) compared with Astley's 157,178 votes (33.7%) after the final count. She will now lead Greater Manchester, a city region comprising 10 boroughs and home to nearly 2.9 million residents.
