Former Israel Defence Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot has launched a new centrist political party, Yashar, and is positioning himself as a leading alternative to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Backed by decades of military experience and shaped by personal tragedy during the Gaza war, Eisenkot says Israel needs new leadership that can restore public trust after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks.

Opinion polls suggest his party is gaining momentum, making him one of Netanyahu's strongest challengers ahead of the election expected later this year.
