India, May 31 -- The head of the World Health Organisation (WHO) travelled to the heart of the latest Ebola crisis in eastern Congo this weekend, issuing an urgent warning that the virus is currently spreading faster than international containment efforts. The outbreak, which involves a rare strain of the disease with no approved treatment or vaccine, continues to strain local health infrastructure despite an influx of international aid.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus arrived in Bunia on Sunday to assess the situation on the ground. While acknowledging the severity of the situation, he expressed a measured optimism based on the region's previous encounters with the disease.
