India, June 28 -- Amid widespread destruction caused by two powerful earthquakes in Venezuela, a dramatic rescue has given people a rare moment of hope. Rescue workers pulled a newborn baby alive from the rubble of a collapsed building in the coastal city of La Guaira before reuniting the infant with family members. The baby's mother was also rescued alive shortly afterwards as emergency crews continued searching for thousands of people still trapped beneath collapsed buildings.

The rescue came as authorities confirmed that the country's earthquake death toll had climbed to 1,430, while tens of thousands of people remain missing.
