India, Sept. 18 -- Saudi Arabia is set to move closer to acquiring one of the world's most advanced fighter aircraft after the United States approved a potential $24.3 billion sale of 48 F-35 Lightning II jets to the kingdom. The proposed package, announced by the US State Department on Thursday, September 17, includes 49 engines, weapons-related equipment, training, and simulators, spare parts and long-term logistical support.
The announcement comes as Saudi Arabia faces growing security challenges across the region, including escalating attacks linked to Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi rebels. Recent reporting has also highlighted concerns over Saudi Arabia's air-defence capabilities and the pressure on its missile-interceptor stocks.
