India, Sept. 9 -- The United States has struck five Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and near Kharg Island, escalating the confrontation with Tehran amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia.US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strikes came after Iran allegedly attempted to attack an American warship with ballistic missiles on two occasions over two days. According to CENTCOM, the vessel evaded both attacks and no US personnel were injured.

The American military said the crews of the targeted tankers were ordered to leave before the vessels were attacked.
