US diesel prices have climbed to $5.783 a gallon, putting the national average within a few cents of the highest level ever recorded.

The latest increase comes as the US faces a tightening fuel market. Disruptions linked to the Iran conflict are limiting energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz, while Russia has extended restrictions on diesel exports. At the same time, US distillate inventories remain unusually low as the country heads into a period when demand for diesel and heating fuels typically increases.
