India, July 21 -- The US and the UK have signalled a renewed commitment to their long-standing alliance after US President Donald Trump held his first phone call with Britain's newly appointed PM Andy Burnham.

During the call, the two leaders discussed defence cooperation, trade, North Sea oil, and efforts to de-mine the Strait of Hormuz, while agreeing to remain in close contact and meet in person in the near future.

The conversation came just a day after Andy Burnham officially took office as Britain's 59th PM, making it one of his first major diplomatic engagements as the country's new leader.
