India, Sept. 10 -- Applicants for British citizenship are being charged more than five times the actual administrative cost to process their paperwork. According to a newly published report by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) on 10 September 2026, the UK Home Office charges individuals a £1,709 adult naturalisation application fee, despite estimating that the actual processing cost to the government is just £324.

When including the mandatory £130 citizenship ceremony fee, the baseline total required to become a British citizen comes to £1,839.
