Trust usurps all: Canada, India and the new economics of security
India, Aug. 23 -- Canada's renewed focus on Beijing looks odd from New Delhi. If Carney wants to reduce dependence on one market, India should be central to that plan.
For much of the last generation, Western governments treated trade with China as if commerce could be kept apart from national security. The theory was simple. China would manufacture, Canada would sell resources, consumers would get cheaper goods, and deeper trade would make Beijing a more predictable partner. India never had the luxury of believing that fully. New Delhi learned that a country can be an important trading partner without becoming a trusted strategic partner. Canada is now being forced to learn the same lesson.
