India, Sept. 5 -- A teacher may be remembered for a particular subject, a classroom conversation or even a few words of encouragement given on a difficult day. On September 5, students across India get an opportunity to turn those memories into a simple message of gratitude.

India celebrates Teachers' Day every year on September 5, marking the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the country's renowned philosopher, academic and second President. The tradition began in 1962, when Radhakrishnan's students wanted to celebrate his birthday and he suggested that the occasion instead honour teachers across the country.
