India, Aug. 25 -- Indian wholesale sugar prices have dropped by almost 15 percent in recent days following the government's decision to import 10 lakh tonnes of raw sugar at zero duties. The decision was aimed at curbing wholesale price rise following an upturn in prices, although it has yet to translate into lower prices for consumers. The zero duty imports were done through a Tariff Rate Quota, which will be available till October 31, 2026. It was taken amid the rise in sugar prices before the festive season begins.
